Outlander season 4 episode 8 ratings (predictably) drop on December 23

There was a delay in getting some of the Outlander season 4 episode 8 ratings because of the Christmas holiday, but we’re ready to dive into them now — and the results are about as expected.

We knew going into the December 23 episode that the live+same-day ratings would be down. It was two days before one of the biggest holidays of the year, and beyond just that, the subject matter at the end of “Wilmington” was really dark. It’s understandable if not everyone wanted to watch it live during this particular time of merriment. Overall, just over 900,000 people still caught it live, which means that this is the least-watched live episode since the third episode of the season.

Yet, in some ways it’s almost a victory in itself that the show had as many viewers as it did. It was still able to accumulate a rather-impressive audience for itself, and that does speak to the passionate fan base of the show. This is why these live numbers matter to a network like Starz — it’s not about setting records as much as it is making sure that there is still an interest in their show from old-school television viewers. Not everyone wants to watch an episode of TV on an app or via their DVR; some people enjoy the experience of actually watching an episode of something when it’s on at its scheduled time.

Where are the multi-platform viewer figures?

We do hope that this is something that Starz shares before the end of the season, given how curious we are about how many people are actually watching this show weekly across the app, On-Demand, via repeats, and other airings. These figures allow us to have a real scope of the show’s popularity, though even if we never get them, it does remain clear that this is one of the network’s most-popular shows alongside Power. It doesn’t seem to be slowing down in terms of its spot in the pop-culture consciousness or the wide-spread coverage that it is receiving.

There are still five more episodes of the season left to air, and none of them should have the ratings hurdles that ‘Wilmington” did. While Sunday’s episode is still a part of the holiday window and the January 6 episode is up against the Golden Globes, we don’t perceive either of these to be enormous ratings hindrances on the surface. The Globes may be a slight problem, but hardly a substantial one.

Remember that Outlander has already been renewed at Starz for seasons 5 and 6.
