Why Poldark, The Durrells, and The Good Karma Hospital deserve Christmas Specials
Maybe there are story reasons why these shows don’t get holiday specials — yet, that isn’t stopping us from dreaming.
Poldark – The Aidan Turner – Eleanor Tomlinson series likely doesn’t do a Christmas Special because it is closely following the books and it’d be hard to do a story that is so isolated from everything else that is going on. Yet, we cannot help but think it would be fun to see how the Poldark family tries to commemorate the holiday. Obviously, Christmas in this time period was different than it is in the present era, but isn’t exploring that part of the fun?
The Durrells – This series actually feels perfect for a Christmas Special since you could tell a story that is fairly separate from everything else without it causing a whole lot of trouble. Also, it has the perfect tone for it — it’s lighthearted enough to make it feel perfect for Christmas, while also still dramatic enough to tell an interesting story. Also, at the core of the series is family, and that’s something that is always worth appreciating this time of year. (Alas, because of reports that this is the final season coming up, we have a hard time imagining that we’re going to get one in the future — though technically, the same goes for Poldark.)
The Good Karma Hospital – It and The Durrells aired alongside each other earlier this year, so wouldn’t it be ideal if they were to do so again on Christmas Day? There are a lot of parallels that can be drawn between this show and Call the Midwife, which always does get a Christmas Special. We certainly do think that it could work here as there is a lot of interesting, festive material that could be explored a little bit further.
In general, we do think that there are so many shows that deserve more love this time of year, but this is just a small sample of what’s in our head right now.
