Dynasty season 2 renewal shaky for The CW, especially after latest ratings
Let’s face it — the ratings for the series have never been good, at least in terms of live+same-day measurements. Yet, it has been aided from the start by some other factors. For starters, it comes to The CW via CBS Television Studios, and we’ve come to learn over time that the network likes to have a mixture of Warner Bros. TV and then also CBS shows as a part of their lineup. Meanwhile, it also has a sweet streaming deal internationally, which allows for Dynasty to generate a great bit of revenue via international viewers.
Yet, how much will these things continue to keep the show going? That’s something that we wonder after seeing that Friday’s new episode generated a series-low 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That’s not a number that is easy to come back from, and it makes it all the clearer that this is one of the network’s lower-rated shows. It’s a shame that total viewership doesn’t matter as much, though; Dynasty ironically had its best total viewership of the season for this episode, even though its demo audience completely slipped away.
Beyond the studio argument that we’ve made already, alongside the fact that the network has another night to program for now in Sundays and they’re already losing three shows in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, iZombie, and Jane the Virgin, there are some other things to think about now. For starters, are there really too many other shows that would do that much better in the Dynasty timeslot on Fridays? We’d argue that there are some, but they may not necessarily generate numbers that are so much better that it makes switching things around worthwhile.
Also, can you really feel that confident that you’re retaining all of the other CW programming, as well? If All American, Legacies, and Charmed stick around, maybe you can make a case that Dynasty is more expendable. However, if you end one of these shows plus some of the others mentioned, you may need to keep it just for the sake of having content.
Obviously, there are a lot of things for The CW to think about when it comes to Dynasty — we just hope that there’s a decision before the finale is written so that the writers know to create a cliffhanger or not.
