Call the Midwife 2018 Christmas Special: 3 things to expect

Call the Midwife

The Call the Midwife 2018 Christmas Special is just around the corner! In about 24 hours from this writing, the special will arrive on BBC One in the UK — not too long after that, it will be on PBS in the United States.

In this particular article, what we want to try and do is set the stage to a certain extent for what is coming up — both in terms of the story, but then also the tone of it as we see the show inch closer to a season 8 premiering in the new year. Rest assured that there are no major spoilers ahead.

1. Trixie is back – Helen George took some time away last season for maternity leave, but rest assured that the character will make her presence known in a big way during this year’s special. We hope that her sobriety is now under control and she can be back in her typical spirit. She’s of course fantastic as a midwife, but she also helps the Poplar community feel happy and healthy — and this is the perfect time to bring some of that spirit into the show.

2. New arrivals – Of course, we mean this in terms of babies, but there will also be some new characters who turn up over the course of the episode, as well! Given that this special will be in part setting up the new season, we don’t think that producers are going to shy away from allowing us to meet some people. Change is a natural part of life in Poplar, and it is presented in a way that is super-realistic and makes a great deal of sense.

3. The overall tone of the story – We know that the end of season 7 was heartbreaking given that the series lost Barbara. Moving into the special, however, it seems as though the story is going to do its best to move forward and now cause everyone to descend into a puddle of tears. There may be some sad moments — Call the Midwife has always presented December 25 as a bittersweet time for some — but they aren’t out to cause everyone to descend into a puddle of tears on the holidays. This is an episode that will have some joy and some happiness. This is Christmas as it is in the world, and there are some moments of joy and time for some real, genuine reflection.

Check back tomorrow for all sorts of coverage in terms of the special, and also what could be coming on the other side of it.
