The Voice season 16: How John Legend can set himself up for success

Voice season 13 promo

Tonight, there is no new episode of The Voice on the air, and that’s the first time we’ve been able to say that in a while. Sad, no? We’ve got a couple of months off now until the NBC series returns in January, but we still want to do our best in order to look ahead.

To be specific, we want to look ahead now through the lens of one John Legend, as the superstar singer / musician is the latest coach joining the roster. He’s the perfect one for the show in that he’s been a collaborator for ages and he knows how to help artists succeed. He feels perfect for the show leading up to its return.

Yet, if we could mentor the mentor, what advice would we have for him? Think in terms of three different things.

3. Court a wide array of musical genres – We think it always helps a coach the most when they can work with a lot of different artists across multiple genres. It keeps them creative and fresh! We want to see Legend go after everyone from pop vocalists to gospel singers to also people with roots in R&B or even country. The more styles, the merrier!

2. Push for creative song choices and interesting arrangements – more than anyone, Legend knows that it’s not just about what you sing; it’s about how you sing it. He should push his artists to do more beyond just the typical covers that we tend to hear, time and time again, of various songs.

3. Offer up constructive criticism, and don’t be afraid of it – One of the most frustrating parts of The Voice as a series is that it feels, time and time again, like the coaches are scared of making anyone mad. With that in mind, they don’t say anything harsh about just about anyone. This season is a chance to totally change that. Legend doesn’t have to be mean, but we think it actually would help contestants more if someone would be upfront and clear about what they need to work on moving forward. If he’s not doing it on some of the shows, we absolutely hope that he will be doing it behind the scenes in his mentoring sessions.
