Will New Amsterdam or Manifest be first new NBC show with season 2?

So far, it feels pretty clear that 2018 has been a rather-great one when it comes to NBC. The proof can be found within the ratings!

Typically, a major network in this era is simply satisfied if they can find one new hit among their lineup of shows. Luckily for NBC, however, they’ve managed to pluck out two in between New Amsterdam and then also ManifestBoth of these shows have provided fascinating narratives, great performances, and a loyal fanbase for the network to have on their side in the months to come. Both have also been given full seasons — or at least full seasons via the way in which NBC is describing them — and it seems really clear that they are each going to be sticking around moving forward.

But which one could be renewed first? While its live ratings are slightly lower, we honestly wouldn’t be shocked if it was New Amsterdam. The live ratings have dropped off slightly from the premiere, but this is still a show that is delivering much of what NBC could want, including some consistent ratings following This Is Us at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. It’s not a particularly-easy thing anymore to deliver big live ratings as an original network TV show, but this series is finding a way to consistently pull it off without too much trouble. It’s also got the support of strong DVR viewership to make the return all the more probable.

As for Manifest, on paper it seems like an easy choice for NBC to renew it, and they will give that it has performed really well in most DVR figures in addition to being an outstanding performer in live ratings. The only reason that we think it could be a little bit longer on its renewal is simply because of figuring out its episode count. For story reasons, the decision was made for season 1 to run a total of 16 episodes. Is that going to be the case moving forward? That’s something that the network will have to figure out. There may be a temptation to order more episodes for a season 2, but we’re not necessarily sure that this is a good thing.

Regardless of which show you choose in this debate, you can absolutely feel confident in the future of both New Amsterdam and Manifest. These are two enormously-popular shows and we have a feeling that they are both going to have a long life so long as viewers stick around for them.
