True Detective season 3 boss on collaboration with Deadwood writer

There is something a little bit different about True Detective season 3 in comparison to the first two seasons, and it really starts behind the scenes.

For basically the entirety of the show’s run on HBO, Nic Pizzolatto has been a driving force behind the story. He’s done a lot without a number of co-writers. He had one collaborator through the second season, and now, one of the two co-writers he has for season 3 is Deadwood creator David Milch. This is just about as notable of a collaborator as you are going to have behind the scenes, and per a new story over in Indiewire, this would came about because of the Deadwood movie coming soon to HBO.

Apparently, Pizzolatto was brought in to help with the script for the Deadwood movie, and while he is not credited as a writer in the project, he and Milch formed a bond that paid off when it was time to do True Detective. Here’s some of what Nic claims he learned from that collaborator:

He turned me on to writing out loud, which I’d never done before, and I ended up writing most of the second half of the season out loud, which was a much more spiritually healthy thing to do than be alone in a room with a blank page. I knew he was going to have to go back and do ‘Deadwood’ and get that on its feet again, but I was just glad we had that time together. It’s something I’m going to remember and take with me for the rest of my life […] There were times when I was doing one character and he was doing another, and we were like the dueling banjos or something in ‘Deliverance.’ It was so special to me.”

Anytime that you have a new point of view to challenge your perception of your characters and your story, we certainly think that it is a positive thing. This is why we should be excited about True Detective season 3 — it is still the same voice that brought us the exceptional first season of the show, but there is also another gear and dimension in the mix. There’s even more reason to be excited beyond just the subject matter alone — which, for the record, revolves around yet another person being haunted by a case.

New episodes of True Detective season 3 will be airing on HBO come early next year. Once there’s more news to share on the subject, we’ll have it for you here.
