The Affair season 5 spoilers: Meet Adult Joanie’s husband!

There are a number of things about The Affair season 5 that are going to stir up discussion — with the massive time jump being high on the list. The series has cast Anna Paquin for a major role as an adult version of Joanie, who will throughout the season try and get to the bottom of what really happened to her late mother Alison.

Today, we at least know about one person who is going to be by her side for a good chunk of the journey. According to a new report coming in right now via Deadline, actor Lyriq Bent of She’s Gotta Have It fame will play the part of Joanie’s husband Paul. He is a sports agent and the father of the pair’s two daughters. Per the official character description, “he struggles to keep his wife from falling off the cliff of depression, as they get closer and closer to a terrifying inevitability.” She’s certainly going to need his support given some of the subject matter she is tasking herself with throughout this season.

The Affair season 5 is set to be the final one for the Showtime drama, and just on the basis of the time jump alone it seems as though the writers are taking things in a fascinating, super-ambitious direction. There will still be a story in the present, but what it contains remains very much to be seen. Joshua Jackson may have a limited role in the final season (if he has one at all), and much of the narrative in the current era could revolve a little bit more around the state of things for Noah and Helen. There will be a new love interest for Helen, per some reports that are already out there, so she at least may have a chance at some happiness.

There is no particular premiere date just yet for season 5, but with production already underway all signs point towards getting to see the show back in the air in the summer. That time worked perfectly well for season 4, which to us is one of the most-underrated seasons of any one to date. We just hope that the conclusion to the show as a whole can live up to that legacy.
