Why God Friended Me episode 12 is essential to show’s season 2 hopes

God friended me

While at the moment CBS has already handed God Friended Me a full-season order, they’ve been a little more cagey in regards to a season 2. Do we want it to happen? Absolutely, but there are no guarantees of anything at the moment.

One thing that we are fairly confident about, though, is this — the first episode back on January 6 is going to be an essential one for helping to determine the show’s long-term future. Why is that? Think in terms of a few different reasons.

1. It’s coming on after a lengthy hiatus – It’s always noteworthy how shows fare after being off for a little while. Audiences have an opportunity to bail following a break after their viewing habits change / are adjusting somehow. It’s one of the easiest times to move on to some other things.

2. It’s airing opposite the Golden Globes – This is enormous competition for the CBS series, and we think that if God Friended Me is going to be able to withstand that, that bodes well for its future.

3. The eventual decline of NFL lead-ins – For at least some of the fall, God Friended Me had the benefit of airing opposite NFL programming. Yet, the regular season will be over by the time we get around to this game and while there are playoffs that could deliver some ratings, there’s no guarantee that God Friended Me will have much in the way of a lead-in at all. It’s too early for the roster of games to be set.

Basically, if you’re enjoying God Friended Me — which you may very well be, especially when you think about the way that this past episode ended with the Falken cliffhanger — there’s a lot of great stuff that is worth checking out moving forward. The best way to ensure that the series continues to move forward is to check it out live. We’re reasonably hopeful based on the first half of the season that the show will come back for more, but this is a series that needs a grassroots movement almost more than any other. It’s not a series with a lot of marquee stars or one that viewers outside of the core CBS audience will be altogether familiar with. There needs to be some more word and discussion all about it, and that starts from some of the viewers who are already checking it out.
