Is Saturday Night Live new tonight? The wait for a new host

Unfortunately, the reality at present is quite simple — there is no more SNL at the moment, and there won’t be for the remainder of the year. This past episode featuring Matt Damon is the last one that you’re going to be seeing for a little while now, with the primary reason for that being that the cast deserves a chance to spend a little bit of time with members of their own families. If they did a show tonight, it would’ve been the fourth straight outing and at a certain point, this gets particularly exhausting for everyone involved. Doing SNL can be at times an around-the-clock operation, especially when it comes to some of the writing that happens up to the very last minute.
As for when SNL will actually be returning with new episodes, think along the lines of January, though surprisingly NBC has not confirmed all that much in the way of news about it just yet. There isn’t just a bevy of news out there regarding who the next host will be or precisely what is going to happen on the series moving forward, and that’s somewhat-surprising given that NBC often likes to announce the first January host at some point during the Christmas episode. There may be negotiations happening now or they may just be biding their time in order to find the right person for the job moving forward. We don’t think that there is any shortage of candidates out there. While some people out there are always going to be better hosts than others, this is certainly one of the more in-demand jobs out there. There are so many performers who have dreams of hosting SNL at some point in their lives that we have a hard time imagining that there will be people hiding out from the opportunity to host the series.
It’s possible that SNL could announce some sort of hosting news over the next few days, but our thinking at present now is that they should wait until 2019. After all, doing it now could lead to the news not getting anywhere near the attention it deserves.
