Shadowhunters season 3 spoilers

There are a number of things to be excited about with the remaining 12 Shadowhunters season 3 episodes, and Luke Baines’ version of Jonathan is among them.

What do we know about this version of Jonathan? Well, this is a much more organic iteration of the character than the one played by Will Tudor during the show’s second season. The photo below (via TVLine), featuring Baines as the character, is proof. This is his actual DNA, and his resurrection is going to cause some serious problems for everyone he comes into contact with — though Lilith didn’t exactly achieve everything she wanted in the first half of the season. He’s a formidable character and a foe to be recognized with throughout the remaining episodes.

Yet, one of the things that we’re most intrigued about with Jonathan’s arrival / re-arrival are the complications that could stem from it and some of the more personal scenes. What makes many characters within the world of Shadowhunters interesting is that there is some nuance there. Jonathan is a product of a very specific circumstance, so it’s not exactly fair to call him a black-and-white character by any means. With this new version, it’s a chance to both touch on some themes from the original version while also doing something new and exciting.

Other things worth noting

While Jonathan’s appearance in the remaining 12 season 3 episodes is going to be dramatic, there are some other major stories that will have to be attended to come February. Take, for example, the cliffhanger at the end of the midseason finale with Clary. She’s going to have to be found, and even when she is there is no guarantee that we are looking at the same version of the character at all. She’ll have gone through some different experiences that could change her.

Meanwhile, Magnus Bane absolutely isn’t going to be the same character we saw following his own sacrifice at the end of the midseason finale. There’s a new dynamic worth exploring for him and Alec, one that could offer up Harry Shum Jr. some of his best material so far.
