Hawaii Five-0 season 9 spoilers: More news on Catherine’s return

If you recall, the end of the fall finale for the series ended in a way that was both personal and devastating for Alex O’Loughlin’s character — after all, Joe White (Terry O’Quinn) was killed off in a violent shootout. Because of this now, and the target that is clearly on him (as it was most members of his former SEAL Team), you are going to see Steve out for revenge. That’s why Michelle Borth will be making her first appearance of the season, and why some other people (including Danny, Junior, and the return of Harry Langford) are going to be taking part in the mission, as well.
In speaking more about the return of Catherine via TVLine, here is what showrunner Peter M. Lenkov had to say:
“In telling stories about Steve’s most personal missions, Danny and Catherine, two of the people most close to him in the world, are usually a part of that … Catherine and McGarrett have such a rich past, a deep connection, that when he hurts, she is there and understands … I know the fans will be moved by this next chapter in their story, which is far from over.”
Regardless of how long Catherine is around for this particular visit, we know that there’s always going to be a chance that she comes back down the line. She and Steve are clearly in a place now where such returns are possible and the two have a great relationship, even if the romantic part of it is over for the time being. Does that mean it will be forever? It’s hard to close the door completely on it, but it feels like for at least the immediate future that romance is not the priority. This is more about making sure that there is justice for Joe White and that McGarrett preserves his own future. After all, the longer some of these threats are out there, the more dangerous his own life is.
Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until 2019 to learn, one way or another, if Steve is going to be able to find some semblance of peace.
