For anyone who was wondering about how The Walking Dead season 9 episode 9 was going to pick up the story, it appears as though the writers are not going to make you wait all that long to see the aftermath of the midseason finale. Not only that, but they are also not going to be jumping right over it, either.

Speaking in a new piece via Entertainment Weekly, show executive producer Angela Kang makes it very clear that there is “gonna be a direct pickup” following the events of this past episode, adding that we are “gonna find out what happens to that group that was in the cemetery as they try to make their harrowing journey back home to bury Jesus.” It’s going to be a long, arduous journey for some of these characters in the aftermath of what happened, and to think, things are probably only going to get worse from here given that the Whisperers are set to make their presence felt in a rather-enormous way. All indications suggest that these characters are going to be integral to pushing forward the story of the second half of the season and it certainly seems as though we’re not done seeing people killed off.
More than anything else, our main sentiment entering the second half of the season is one of great uncertainty. It’s hard to project precisely how the story will continue moving forward now, other than that all indications suggest that we are going to see some bizarre twists and turns. There’s also still the question as to the long-term future of many of the different cast members. Take, for example, Danai Gurira, who has been balancing this series with some film and theater work. Meanwhile, we know that Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride each have new deals, but they are not necessarily deals to remain with the flagship show itself. They could take them to some other interesting corners of the show universe, depending on what they want to do and whatever ideas the showrunners have.
But, before we get around to any of that, we are aware that there are still eight more episodes of The Walking Dead proper to come and there’s a great deal that can happen in this particular span of time.
