Saturday Night Live season 44 return date hopes, host speculation

Saturday Night Live

Following last night’s final episode of 2018, what will the Saturday Night Live season 44 return date be? Within this article, we’ve got a little bit of speculation on that very subject!

Let’s kick things off here, though, with a surprising reminder that last night’s new episode did not actually disclose who the next host would be or when the series for sure would be returning. That’s fairly unusual for NBC, who often tends to use their final episode in a batch of them to announce when the series is returning to the air.

What’s also unusual is a lack of a specific date, but for now, the most likely guess is that we’re going to see at least a couple of episodes over the course of the month. January 5 seems like a little too early of a return date, mostly because the cast needs a full week leading up to the show in order to prepare new episodes. Our guess, at least at present, is that new episodes are going to be coming your way on either January 12 or January 19.

As for who could host, keep an eye on some of the big contenders in awards season. This is often the time of year in which SNL likes to pluck a notable actor or two from movies in Oscar contention to appear on the show. Rami Malek is an interesting candidate for Bohemian Rhapsody, as is Lady Gaga for A Star is Born. Also, Melissa McCarthy is in the mix this year! Given her fantastic history hosting the show, we wouldn’t be shocked if she stopped by … though she may be at the moment trying to build her clout as a dramatic actress.

Moving beyond the first episode or two of the new year, we would like to get some more alumni back like an Amy Poehler or a Jason Sudeikis. It would also be nice to see Dave Chappelle or Tiffany Haddish, who were both excellent in their previous outings, back on the series in some capacity. As far as experimental hosts go, we’re fine with a big-name athlete getting to host at some point. These shows are usually a hot mess, but there is at least curiosity that comes out of them.

Obviously, once we’ve got a little bit more to say on SNL and the future of various hosts on the show, we’ll have for you here.
