One of the reasons why we were so excited to talk about this particular season here is because, by a pretty wide margin, this may be one of the strongest seasons of Criminal Minds that we’ve had a chance to see in a good while. Why is that? We don’t actually think that it’s altogether hard to really figure out. This is a show that has always been about characters, but we think what’s just as important as seeing them interact while on cases together is seeing them find new venues for them outside of the job.

Throughout this season to date, we’ve seen some really important stuff — that includes getting to see Matt Simmons’ family, Emily Prentiss’ love life, Garcia wrestle with some emotional aftermath of the midseason cliffhanger, and Luke Alvez really work in order to take on some of his past. We’ve also got the engagement of one David Rossi, which happened in a rather spectacular fashion earlier this season and it would be great to see a wedding.

These personal stories are so important because it makes it seem like every single episode of the series is different and we’re not just getting caught up in seeing the same exact story told time and time again. There’s something new and exciting around almost every corner and it makes us feel even more about the people when they are on the job.

Are there characters in need of a greater focus?

Sure! For starters, the annual Matthew Gray Gubler hiatus is even more frustrating when this is a shorter season than we’ve had in years past. Reid’s probably the most under-served character so far this season, and we would actually like to get a little bit more for Simmons and JJ since they’ve each gotten one big personal story and that’s it.

Beyond that, we do hope that Criminal Minds delivers some sort of big, dramatic finale with a particularly-threatening Big Bad at the end of it. If this does turn out to be the final season, and nothing is guaranteed on that front, we do really want to see the show go out with a bang by any means possible.

CarterMatt Verdict

Criminal Minds season 14 has been absolutely fascinating, informative, intense, and dramatic. With that in mind, this could be the best half a season that we’ve seen from the franchise in years. It feels like there’s more thought and care put into the show than before and if this is the final, we think that it will at least help to ensure that the send-off is satisfying.
