The video below teases, first and foremost, a threat that is more formidable than any other that we’ve seen this season. Apparently, it could be the most dangerous creature in the entire universe. According to The Doctor in the promo below, this creature has been buried underneath the earth for centuries, but something is stirring that may cause it to rise to the forefront and inflict all sorts of enormous chaos.
The best thing about this Doctor Who New Year’s Special is simply a chance to explore new horizons and do something that is fun and extremely different. We know that there was a decision to not have any returning monsters for the majority of season 12 … but what about for the special? Could we potentially get a Dalek or some other familiar creature in here? There’s certainly a great case to be made for it, mostly in that this would give us an opportunity to actually see something really iconic with the show at a festive time of year. It’s a little bit of past-meets-present and there is certainly something rather exciting about that particular idea. It’s a chance to look back at this past year while also giving us a nice dose of the series that so many people knew and loved.
No matter what happens, though, we’re hoping to see something really lighthearted and fun with a deeper meaning underneath. Given that this is a story airing on a holiday, we don’t think that it’s necessarily right to clamor for something enormously dramatic or devastating to occur. We just want it to be memorable, and it really should be given that we are not getting a chance to see more episodes until we get around to 2020. That’s a long time to wait, even if we do recognize that it takes a good while to make some of these episodes. The production value in particular is something that has gone up a notch this year in particular.
