Of course, the final season is doing things a little differently, largely because they don’t have a whole lot of choice in the matter. There are only twelve episodes in this season, with them airing more than likely as a continuous run throughout the winter. It’s going to begin with “Year Zero” on January 3, which should allow us a chance to see how Bruce, Gordon, and many of the show’s villains are handling the aftermath of the bombings and the city-wide panic. This is a very different Gotham, one that will be on the verge of ruin. There may not be any saving it now — clearly nothing’s going to get all that much better until Batman arrives — but there are some who will do almost anything that they can to survive.
Fox recently released the Gotham season 5 episode 1 synopsis below — you can check that out in the event you do want some more news as to what’s coming next:
Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne face the chaos Gotham City has become. Their mission to keep the city safe becomes more complicated as the villains who survived the attack on the city begin to resurface and claim various territories. Meanwhile, Selina Kyle grapples with how to deal with her uncertain future in the all-new “Year Zero” season premiere episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Jan. 3 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-501) (TV-14 L, V)
The Selina story could be one of the more interesting ones within this final season, mostly because she may still be doing everything that she can in order to determine just what sort of person she wants to be. We recognize at this point that she has the capacity for so much good and to do a number of noble things. Yet, at the same time her basic instincts from her upbringing may send her in a darker direction. The reality is that we know she’ll become Catwoman; yet, she’s at least a more ambiguous villain than some of the other famous faces in Gotham. Maybe we will have a chance to see that play out throughout this final season — amidst, of course, all of the other violence, destruction, and fear.
