Is The Punisher season 2 premiere date coming in January?
In a new video this week highlighting some of the new releases for the month of January, you see some footage at the very end of it of the upcoming season of the Marvel adaptation. While this is no explicit confirmation of a premiere date, we at least feel a little bit more optimistic about it than we’ve felt previously. This second season has been many months in the making and we imagine that if you loved the first go-around, there’s a reasonably-good chance that you will also love this. We’re looking at here a violent, complicated batch of episodes with a number of shocking twists likely jammed in there somewhere.
Of course, with every bit of good news comes bad news and because of that, there’s a chance that the series is going to be canceled on the other side of it premiering. Given the recent cancellations of other Marvel – Netflix series including Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, it feels as though the writing is on the wall for every single one of them. All of these cancellations feel, for the most part, like symptoms to a very-specific issue — Netflix wanting to move out of the Marvel game, and Disney likely looking to consolidate most of their Marvel properties on their own streaming service. That’s why you’ve got series in development based around Loki, Scarlet Witch, and some other notable characters.
Our philosophy at the moment when it comes to The Punisher season 2 is simply this — if it’s going to get canceled, Netflix may as well release the next batch of episodes as soon as possible. It’s better to just be able to go ahead and enjoy them. We recognize that there’s still some super-minute possibility that the show will get renewed, but it’s really hard to have confidence in anything Marvel on Netflix with recent history in mind. After all, Daredevil in particular was thought of as the crown jewel in the lineup and the one that generated the most attention for itself. That also seems to be the one character within this universe who could feasibly show up on some other platform in the near future.
Of course, we’ll have a little bit more information on a season 2 premiere date the moment it comes out — and also some information on the future of The Punisher beyond that.
