Outlander season 4 episode 6 ratings show’s highest since premiere

According to the live+same-day estimates, Sunday night a total of 1.04 million people tuned in to watch the exceptional return of David Berry and arguably one of the best episodes of this season. (Read our full review of it over at the link here.) This is the second time this season that more than a million live viewers have tuned in to watch an Outlander episode live, with the other recent time being the premiere episode. That episode, with 1.08 million viewers, still has set the bar.
We know that there’s a good school of thought out there that live numbers don’t matter much when the majority of the audience is watching via other means including the app, On-Demand, or on DVR after the fact. These numbers, much like international viewing, don’t count towards live+same-day estimates. Yet, here’s another interesting way to look at it — despite how many other ways in which there are to watch Outlander in 2018, the series still is managing to perform this well in live viewers. There are still people out there wanting to check it out via traditional television at the time that it’s on the air. That is important for trying to map out the long-term future of the program, especially when you start to look down the road to seasons 5 and 6. Nobody really knows precisely what the future holds beyond that point and all anyone can do is speculate.
The next ratings test
While we don’t anticipate any huge fluctuations for Sunday night’s new episode (which should be the biggest one for Roger and Brianna so far), the December 23 episode is going to be a curious case study as to how many viewers want to watch Outlander live two days before Christmas. We don’t have high expectations for that particular episode, mostly because Starz likely knew from the moment that they scheduled it that they would be more reliant on delayed viewing and other measurements. If this was ten years ago, they probably wouldn’t air an episode on that night because there wouldn’t be as many viewers around to watch it. Yet, now things are a totally different ball game thanks to the advent of streaming and more families having access to DVR and On-Demand viewing. There’s not anywhere near as much pressure on one measurement.
