Grey’s Anatomy: Ellen Pompeo hasn’t spoken to Patrick Dempsey since his exit

So because of the close relationship that Meredith and Derek had on the ABC series, of course there’s this hope that Pompeo and Dempsey would be as close after the fact as their characters. Yet, often isn’t any guarantee of this. That’s something that Pompeo herself confirmed when she made it clear that she and her former co-star haven’t spoken in years. There’s no ill will or drama here; they’ve each just moved forward.
Speaking via TV Guide while appearing on the Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk, here is some of what Ellen had to say:
“We haven’t spoken since he’s left the show … I have no hard feelings toward him. He’s a wonderful actor, and we made the best TV you can make together. That’s a talented man right there. He did 11 amazing years. Typically, when people leave the show, they need to sort of re-find themselves, who they are without the show, because the show takes up so much of your life. You need that time to like figure out who you are without the show. So, we have not spoken, but I will always have a place in my heart for Patrick.”
This was all really nice of her to say, and of course, we do think that this is the sort of thing that will make people smile — they still have a lot of love for each other. Sometimes, you don’t need to keep in touch with someone on a daily basis for some of those close memories to be there. They can at times linger and stay with you. We’re not altogether positive that we’ll ever see Dempsey on Grey’s Anatomy again, but we feel like it would still be nice to see him stop by on some other network TV show at some point in the future.
Grey’s Anatomy will return with new episodes in the new year, and we certainly feel like one of the priorities there will be seeing whether or not Meredith is ready to move forward with her romantic life. She has options, after all!
