There is some really sad, tragic news transpiring today from the set of Starz and their hit show Power.
According to a new report coming in via Deadline, 63-year old production assistant Pedro Jimenez was killed early this morning after being struck by a car while preparing production for a shoot on location in Brooklyn. As a result of the tragedy, filming for the series has temporarily halted. Jimenez was a long-standing member of the crew who has been there from the start of filming many years ago. He was one of those unsung heroes who goes to work everyday and does everything within his power to ensure that things run smoothly. Television production is a team effort and it really has to be, especially when you consider some of the long hours and myriad of locations that go into making it. For a show like Power in particular, one of the principal tasks is trying to keep most of New York City’s street and foot traffic at bay for shooting. It’s one of the difficult parts of working in such a heavily-congested area.
The aforementioned site notes that the NYPD have already spoken to the driver of the accident, who is also reportedly a crew ember on the show. An investigation is ongoing and may be for at least the immediate future.
In a statement, here is what a representative for Starz had to say about the tragic death:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of the members of our Power family … Our thoughts are with Mr. Jimenez’ family as we work to fully understand what has happened.”
The time off from production is to allow most of the cast and crew to grieve, and for everyone to process what happened. We hope that Power will find a way to honor him in upcoming episodes; we are absolutely sure that they will, whether it be via a title card or some other memorial.
Power season 6 is slated to premiere on Starz this summer. Our thoughts go out to Jimenez’s family and the entire show cast and crew during this really difficult time. (Photo: Starz.)
