We certainly did think that there were some points both for and against the series opting to air new episodes across the holidays, with one of the biggest cases for it being the simple fact that viewers are still around for the holidays. Outlander is not a show that is fully reliant on live viewers, and because neither Christmas Eve / Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year, they don’t have to worry all that much about the idea of the show airing on one of those problematic days. The DVR viewership will still be there and there isn’t as much to worry about.
Luckily, it does look as though Starz is going to keep the show on the air throughout the entirety of the holidays and into the new year, with the finale tentatively set for January 27. That means that the series will be over before we get to Super Bowl Sunday in February, which is actually a bigger ratings threat for the series than any particular holiday. There’s just so much television programming on during that particular day that it swallows almost everything else in its path.
Do we worry about press coverage being a little bit lighter because of the show airing on December 23 and 30? Sure, but we do think that it will get by just fine when it comes to coverage. We just hope that everyone remembers that the series is on these particular days. One other, previously unmentioned benefit with the show airing on these days is that there being almost no other programming out there, the series may be able to command even more of an audience than it did previously. That’s one way in which the ratings could actually improve.
Ultimately, Outlander is not the only show opting to continue to put new episodes on the air during the holidays. Bravo is choosing to do something fairly similar when it comes to Top Chef. Meanwhile, Starz is also premiering Counterpart and you are going to even get a chance to see Madam Secretary continue to air on CBS on December 23 — a fairly-rare move for a network television show. Typically, they are more reliant on live ratings and choose to take nights off because of that close to major holidays.
