Outlander season 4 episode 6 spoilers: What’s next for Murtagh?

We’ll admit that there is still a major part of us that is coming off of the high of getting to see this character back somewhat in the fold — while there were rumors aplenty out there about his return, there was still something joyous and surprising that came from seeing him reunite with Jamie and then Claire. He is a part of this world now, but it doesn’t seem as though there is a hurry to make him a permanent fixture at Fraser’s Ridge.
In a sneak peek over at Town & Country Magazine, you can see Murtagh spending a little bit of time with Claire at the property before admitting that while he’d love to stay, he does still need to attend to his forge and the life that he has back in town. He’s also a part of that Regulator movement — as a matter of fact, he’s one of the leaders of it! This is a part of who is now and it doesn’t seem like Murtagh can just drop everything that he had in order to start some new life with the Frasers … especially when you consider everything that he now stands for. He’s a part of a movement that is all about fighting for the people’s rights and against high taxation, and these are the sort of things that will be building blocks for the Revolutionary War. For him to suddenly sign up for life at a place given to Jamie via British Government land, it would be a significant about-face that could irk many of the people Murtagh is working with.
With that being said, we’ve already reported on occasion here that you will still see a good bit of Duncan Lacroix moving forward — his arc may extend beyond this season and he is just one of many people who are a part of the show’s extended family. Right now, Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian are the permanent Fraser’s Ridge residents that we’re getting a chance to see and hear from. Meanwhile, we’ve also got people like Murtagh, Lord John Grey, Marsali, and Fergus who could turn up on occasion depending on the story and what Jamie and Claire could need from them.
Then, there’s also Brianna — we certainly cannot forget about her, can we?
