Following tonight’s finale — and of course the New Year’s Special coming on January 1 — when will Doctor Who season 12 premiere? In this article, we come bearing some information on this very subject!
Let’s start, first and foremost, with a reminder that Jodie Whittaker will return as The Doctor for at least one more year. This is something that the actress shared recently in a statement, not that this comes as much of a surprise. Whittaker joins David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi as modern Doctors to last longer than one season. The last Doctor to have only a one-season run was Christopher Eccleston, who was the person who really ushered in the modern era of the series more so than anyone else.
As for when we will actually see Doctor Who back on the air, however, you may be stuck waiting for a little while. There’s no indication that production has started on Doctor Who season 12 and with that in mind, it could prove challenging for new episodes to air in the autumn of 2019. It’s possible, but it would probably take filming kicking off at some point in January or early February. It’s not entirely clear that there will be scripts ready by then.
If Doctor Who is in fact delayed, we do think that there are going to be a couple of different options for the series.
1. Late fall 2019 – We do think that the BBC could opt to move the series into a split-season format, one that features a batch of episodes in November / December and then another batch in February / March. This would give production all the time they need to film new episodes without delaying the official premiere by a really long period of time. This may be the best compromise situation possible.
2. Early 2020 – This is probably the likelier of the two possibilities in the event that Doctor Who is delayed. If we are only going to be getting another ten episodes plus a special, we don’t think that the BBC is going to be altogether interested in handing out batches of five episodes in the fall, followed by another batch of five coming a little bit later down the road.
Regardless of when Doctor Who does premiere with new episodes, we certainly do think that the future remains bright for the BBC franchise. While we know there have been some polarizing episodes of the series this year, it has been enormously successful commercially. Also, Whittaker has been fantastic and her presence has helped to refresh a series that constantly does need reinvention in order to keep it as strong as humanly possible.
Update: It was confirmed tonight via the BBC that new episodes will start airing in early 2020.
