Saturday Night Live music: Mumford & Sons perform ‘Guiding Light,’ ‘Delta’

Saturday Night Live review

This weekend’s new episode of Saturday Night Live is going to feature a performance from none other than Mumford & Sons. They’ve been on the series before and with that in mind, we at least had a moderate idea as to what we could expect to see from them. We’d get a chance to see some of their folk and bluegrass stylings.

The first song that Mumford & Sons performed tonight was a wonderful song known as “Guiding Light,” which is a track that first came out a little bit earlier this year. If you’ve heard Mumford & Sons perform in the past, there’s a good chance that you’ve heard most of this before. They have a signature sound but it works for them.

What we appreciate about this more than anything else is simply that we got a chance to see a live band hit the SNL stage and perform something that really did throw you into the experience of what they were singing and the emotion that was in here. We think that there are some viewers who first discovered Mumford & Sons as a band back when they were first on SNL years ago, and this felt like a really welcome return with that in mind.

This was a great start to Mumford & Sons’ stint as an SNL host; we’ll check back later in order to update you on what the band did next.

Second Song

This was “Delta,” and it was an emotional, poignant ballad that stripped away a lot of the emotion and left us with something that was even more focused. What was distinctive about both of these songs in one way is that it felt like the group really tried their best to show that they could do some different stuff beyond just “I Will Wait” and “Little Lion Man” — we’ve got a feeling that “Delta” is a song that could be featured in movies down the road. It just has an instrumentation that will work really well beyond just what we saw from it tonight.

Overall, we do think that we can say that about Mumford & Sons on SNL tonight — they brought a lot of emotion to the show and maybe offered up the best pure performance of the season tonight. They filled up the studio with sound and tried to create something that felt truly unique.
