Last night’s new episode of Supernatural, first and foremost, ended up generating a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and more than 1.5 million viewers to go along with it. Meanwhile, Legacies drew a 0.4 rating and around 1.2 million viewers. While it’s true that there were some preemptions on The CW last night due to NFL football and there could be adjustments, we’re talking about a fairly-small market. If we were talking about New York or Los Angeles, we’d be a little more concerned that these numbers would fall in the finals.

Even if there is a little bit of slippage, The CW still has to be thrilled with the performance of this lineup, especially with them continuing to try and shift their thinking beyond just the live-TV model that has defined the industry for years. While they do care about live viewers, they’ve become increasingly interested in finding ways to monetize their shows via app viewing, streaming, and also DVR viewership. The CW is smart in that they allow anyone to view episodes on their app (or at least the most-recent ones), which makes it so that they can constantly find a way to add to their overall viewership.

When it comes to Supernatural, we have long assumed that this is the sort of show that could last however long that the powers that be and the cast wanted it to. The higher ratings don’t do anything to change our mind with that. When it comes to Legacies, meanwhile, we had some concerns going in that the ratings for the final season of The Originals weren’t high enough to get this spin-off where it needed to go. Yet, we’ve seen this show pull in fans of the Vampire Diaries and also new viewers with its mixture of teen drama and fun supernatural stuff. We’re actually feeling more confident about a season 2 renewal for it at the moment than any other new show on The CW — it’s been incredibly consistent throughout the first season and it feels like there’s so much more potential for what it could be.
