Following tonight’s brilliant, super-inspired tribute to all things Janet, the NBC series will be taking a small hiatus — which shouldn’t come as too big of a shock, given that this is something that they do every year at about this time. Following that, they then come back in the new year with another run of episodes in order to finish it off. This is precisely going to be the case this time around, as well.

NBC has already announced that The Good Place will return with its first episode of the new year on Thursday, January 10 at a new time: 9:30 p.m. Eastern. There are a few schedule shifts that are happening at the moment because of some of what NBC wants to do at midseason, but at least this is not a situation where we’re seeing something get in the way of the show coming back soon. Given that The Good Place is a series with such a limited run of only 13 episodes a season, there’s a recognition on the network’s part that it would be extremely cruel to force everyone to wait some sort of super-long time in order to properly see it. Our hope is that The Good Place ends in a big way this season that sets the stage for season 4 just like season 2 set the stage for season 3 — a return trip to Earth, one that has turned out to be every bit as brilliant and bizarre as you could have possibly hoped.)

Of course, at some point at the end of this season we’ll move over to some of our customary questions as to how long a show like The Good Place, with its out-of-this-world premise and sense of creativity, can really last. It’s the strongest comedy, pound for pound, on network TV; with that in mind, the general assumption would be to just assume that it is going to last forever. Yet, at the same time we know that this is not actually going to be the case. At some point, it’s going to be hard to keep it at the same level.

Luckily, though, we’re not there just yet; there will be a lot of good stuff to come in the new year, even if we are talking about a tiny handful of episodes before the show goes on hiatus again.
