Golden Globes 2019 snubs: Better Call Saul, Sam Heughan, Outlander, more

Better Call Saul season 4

While there were many outstanding nominations at the 2019 Golden Globes this morning, there were also a number of notable snubs — in this article, we’re going to do our best to break some of those down.

Better Call Saul, Bob Odenkirk, and Rhea Seehorn – Despite having arguably its strongest season yet, the Better Call Saul spin-off was ignored in just about every category.

Outlander and Sam Heughan – The nomination for Caitriona Balfe is yet again worth celebrating, but for some reason, the series has been snubbed for years and Heughan has yet to receive the love and support he deserves for Jamie Fraser.

This Is Us and its cast – Watching the ensemble drama be completely shut out after dominating much of awards season the past few years is shocking, to say the least.

The Handmaid’s Tale – While it did receive nominations for Yvonne Strahovski and Elisabeth Moss, it was surprisingly left out of the Drama Series category.

The Terror, Tobias Menzies, and Jared Harris – Why aren’t critics voting for this show?

Westworld – The HBO drama was the recipient of a lot of love at the Emmys, but really not any here beyond Thandie Newton.

Ted Danson, The Good Place – At least the series and Kristen Bell themselves received some love.

Jodie Whittaker, Doctor Who – While a longshot, we did still want to see this happen on some level.

Santa Clarita Diet and its cast – This is a comedy category, and consistently it remains one of the funniest comedies in all of TV.

Atlanta – Despite Donald Glover getting some love, there wasn’t any for the series itself.

Insecure and its cast – One of the other funniest comedies on TV. Yet, where’s the love and support for it?

Tom Ellis, Lucifer – We knew that it wouldn’t happen, but we still wanted to live in a world where it could!

The truth here is that there are going to be more and more snubs almost every year with the Globes just because there are about a billion or so shows on the air at this point. With that in mind, it only feels natural that there are going to be a ton of snubs. Really, the big losers in general this year were long-established shows, as new series dominated a number of the major categories and in a way, we get it. Voters always love the new, fresh thing, and what we’re seeing this time around in the nominations proves that to be true once more.
