If you loved seeing some of your favorite Coven characters back for American Horror Story: Apocalypse, we come today bearing a little bit of good news and bad news.
Speaking in a new interview with ET Online, show executive producer Ryan Murphy announced via his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony (congrats, Ryan!) that you will have a chance to see the coven again — but not in the upcoming ninth season. He has plans for them down the road, which in theory means that we could see them in season 10. That’s how long that the franchise is currently renewed through and while we certainly could see the show last a little bit longer than that, we recognize that there are no guarantees with anything. Murphy has a new deal with Netflix and while that does not negate American Horror Story in the future, it is a lot for one person to take on.
For the time being, we mostly just consider it a win that American Horror Story is actually going to be potentially bringing back these characters at all. There was a time with this franchise where the intention was for them to be reasonably standalone seasons from each other, but some of those lines really started to blur in American Horror Story: Freak Show where the character Pepper, who appeared on Asylum, was featured as a prominent character. After that, we ended up getting a chance to see Queenie, a character from Coven, make an appearance on American Horror Story: Hotel. She was killed off on that season, but that death was effectively re-written on American Horror Story: Apocalypse when we had a chance to see Mallory change much of the timeline.
Is all of this in a way confusing? Absolutely, and that is why the only thing that really matters all that much right now is simply knowing the fact that we are going to be seeing the Coven on the series again at some point … at least if what Murphy is saying now comes to fruition moving forward. He certainly is entitled to change his mind based on the ebb and flow of things behind the scenes. Season 9 is currently untitled, and at the moment, we imagine that it will be ready for the fall of 2019. These shows often have a tendency to come together at the last minute so we may not actually know all that much until we get around to the fall. (Typically, the earliest of the early announcements comes at some point in the spring.)
