The Doctor Who season 11 finale will be here on Sunday night and judging from the latest promo, it does seem like we’re in for quite a battle!

The new promo below is short, but at the same time, also very much effective in setting up the scope of the story and the danger that lies ahead. We’re seeing some of these characters venturing off to a dangerous new world, one with distress signals and threats lying around almost every single corner. It’s a chance to continue to build up these characters and, by the end of this, actually raise the question as to whether or not we could see all of these companions stick around moving into season 12.
We do think that Doctor Who season 11 as a whole has been a fascinating experiment, mostly in that Jodie Whittaker has been fantastic and visually, it may be the greatest thing that this series has ever done. Yet, it’s still rather-hard to shake that feeling that there is something missing, another gear that the writers could potentially venture in the direction of at some point down the line. There’s a little bit more that can be done and a little bit more here that should be done. We would’ve liked to see something akin to a larger story arc near the end of the season, one where at least the final couple of episodes built together and told something a little more akin to a continuous story. As it is, what we’re seeing here is a series that is rather disjointed in nature near the end — we’re used to the Doctor Who standalone hours, but these ones have felt especially foreign without any classic monsters or things that are familiar to the franchise.
In the end, this has been a good season, one that included some interesting risks and monster-threats that we have not had all that much of a chance to see before. Yet, we do almost think that it is one that could have delivered a little bit more near the finish line to show us where the series could go moving forward — maybe that is something that the finale will deliver, or potentially the Christmas Special on the other side of it. We just don’t want to hold our breath too much on it, at least at this very moment.
