While some networks tend to announce their return dates at the conclusion of their midseason finales, the good news in regards to The Good Doctor is that they aren’t even making you wait that long! ABC has confirmed that come January 14, you are going to have an opportunity to see the Freddie Highmore series back on the air with new episodes. That means that you’ll be checking it out again one week after the return of The Bachelor and it definitely does make some sense for ABC to get the series back as soon as possible within the new year. After all, that gives them the opportunity to really dive in and enjoy the great lead-in that the reality series provides. (Anything to give The Good Doctor the best ratings possible!)
As for precisely what you’re going to see coming up over the course of the series, we would say that, first and foremost, it really doesn’t have to be all that complicated. The #1 priority here should just be continuing to provide strong medical cases, given that this is the backbone of the series. You need cases that bring about and test the humanity of some of your main characters, especially given that they’ve been through so much already. The more ways that you can find to alter their lives and have them learn something about themselves, the better.
Also, we definitely are hoping that the series continues to enrich the lives of many of the main characters. They’ve done a good job with this, especially as of late, when it comes to Dr. Alex Park and then also Dr. Morgan Reznick. The more of this that we have, the better off that we’re going to be on the other side of it — we’ll know and care about the ensemble more than ever. Even though Dr. Shaun Murphy may be the lead and therefore the character we’re the most constantly interested in, this is a show where every single story is important. These people enrich his life and, to go along with that, he certainly has an impact on theirs.
