For Anthony Russell, he had a chance to make an impact on the pop-rock charts here with “I Predict a Riot” … provided that he ends up actually winning the show. He was joined on this song by none other than Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs. The problem here is that this song is so iconic to someone who is not Anthony and he had to contend with that through the entirety of this performance. We’re not 100% sure that this works for anyone other than the original artist.

Still, at least this is the sort of music that we imagine that Russell is going to do outside of the show. He doesn’t have the natural vocal talents of some of the other people on the show and with that in mind, he needs to compensate with energy and charisma. Those are things that he does have in spades.

Probably the most interesting thing about this performance to us is that it did manage to feel super-current, even if this is actually a song that is more than ten years old. It still somehow managed to feel very much new and refreshing, even with our earlier criticism in mind. This did feel more like Ricky Wilson featuring Anthony, but at least it was a different, energetic way to kick off a show that will probably feature a number of intense moments from start to finish.

Remember that if you do purchase one of these winner’s singles after the fact, the proceeds do go to charity and this is a way in which to help others in need at this particular time of year. That’s one of the many reasons why you should want to support these artists, beyond of course just helping them get their careers off to a great start. It has been harder for X Factor winners over time to really have long-term mainstream success, but successful winner’s singles are a way to definitely get the ball rolling in the right direction.
