This week’s new episode of Saturday Night Live featured a performance by none other than Anderson .Paak, and going into this episode, it was rather hard to know just how this performance would be. We’re not something that is incredibly familiar with some of his work outside of the show, so because of that, we were going into this show reasonably blind as to what we could expect to see coming up.

For his first performance tonight, Anderson chose to perform one of his recent hits in “Tints,” which features none other Kendrick Lamar — who also showed up for this performance. There were a couple of different things that were cool about the staging tonight, whether it be the lighting or the fact that Anderson himself sings while also performing the drums. That’s something that you don’t often see all that much these days. This song has a soulful, funky sort of vibe that made it an incredibly-good time to listen to from start to finish.
As someone not altogether familiar with some of Anderson’s music, we still felt like this was an engrossing, magnetic performance that certainly got us excited for whatever he could be doing a little bit later on the show. Perhaps most importantly, he found a way to constantly bring a sense of energy and fun to the proceedings tonight.
Later on in the show, Paak came out in order to perform “Who R U,” a song that was absolutely different from what he did in order to lead off the show. This was more of a straight hip-hop number and one that had an intense, driving beat and a whole lot less of a band backing Anderson up. He took the stage largely by himself and commanded the stage completely. This is not a performance that you can really pull off at all unless you’ve got the utmost confidence in precisely what you are doing, but the good news is that Anderson had that and then some.
Basically, by the end of the night he really set the bar incredibly high for everyone else — we’re not altogether sure if anyone is going to be able to match the pure level of awesomeness that he brought to the table here, but we are more than excited to find out!
