Shameless season 10 renewal hopes: Why the long wait?

Why hasn’t there been a renewal for a season 10 just yet? We do think that it’s a reasonable question at this point to wonder mostly considering some past timelines. Last year, for example, Shameless was renewed in November for a season 9; yet, we are still waiting at this point to find out the future.
A big part of the reason for this is probably the uncertainty around the future of the cast in general. The last time that we had a long wait before a renewal was leading up to season 8, and the reason for that at the time was rather simple: The contract situation with some of the leads. Now, it may just be trying to find the right path forward in general. Cameron Monaghan is already gone; meanwhile, Emmy Rossum will be joining him after the finale. Despite all of this, the general sentiment that is out there is that there could still be a little bit more in the way of Shameless coming down the road. That seems to be something that the producers want to pull off.
In making more, though, there could be even more negotiations to give pay raises to the returning cast and crew, in addition to of course just figuring out what the ideal story for the new season would be in the first place. What is the proper way to continue this story that appeals to the majority of fans out there? That is something that most of the powers-that-be do need to figure out given that otherwise, they could be left with a mess … and nobody wants that.
Commercially, there is every reason in the world to keep Shameless going. It performs very well on Showtime, it does well via their streamlining measurements, and beyond all of that it’s fairly easy to imagine that it could still be interesting and relevant moving forward. We do think that Showtime will need to make a decision one way or another by early next year unless they want to delay a season 10, and in some ways, it may not be easy since there are so many great characters on this show and the story still does remain strong.
Yet, doesn’t every story also still have its proper ending? Without so many Gallaghers, is Shameless really the same show at all?
