Why Agents of SHIELD, Cloak & Dagger will survive when Netflix shows did not

Agents of SHIELD

Is it fair to say at the moment that we’re at a precarious point in superhero TV? Just based on what’s happening over at Netflix alone, we understand that argument a thousand percent. Iron Fist, Luke Cageand Daredevil are all canceled, and it does seem like there could be some other superhero shows that eventually fall elsewhere. It’s a function of there being more of this programming now than there has been in the past and beyond just that, the fact that viewership for these sort of shows tends to erode over time.

Yet, we don’t want to push the panic button with all of superhero TV at the moment, largely due to the fact that we are still talking about a reasonably-small sample size here. Also, there seem to be some ulterior motives going on with the end of these Netflix shows, whether it is Netflix wanting to move on from these properties or Disney itself determining that it wants to bring them back in-house rather than on a streaming service that, not too far down the line, will be its rival.

What we do want to stress, at least at the moment, is that the end of the Netflix shows does not necessarily dictate the end for some other ones that are out there under the Marvel banner. For example, Agents of SHIELD was recently renewed for a seventh season and, at least at the moment, there’s no reason to worry about it. Provided that this season airs in the summer of 2020, it may outlast all of the Marvel – Netflix shows. Because it airs on ABC, a network that Disney already owns, there’s not as much to worry about there. The same goes for Cloak & Dagger over on Freeform, which is also a network under the larger Disney banner.

For those wondering, there also isn’t anything to worry about for now when it comes to Runaways, as Disney is at least a partial owner in Hulu and they have every reason to want to continue to see it be successful there. We don’t see any of these shows competing with their Disney+ streaming service plans, which include shows featuring Loki as well as Scarlet Witch and many others. Some of the plans are still more or less in the early stages.
