Tonight, Hawaii Five-0 season 9 episode 9 presented a story about superheroes — or, at least people pretending to be them.

The big case at the heart of this episode began with the death of a famous vigilante, which in turn led to the team doing everything that they could to dive into what was the city’s local superhero culture. There was a lot of fun to be had throughout the episode, whether it be learning that one of the other local superheroes in Guardian was actually a fraud who was just filming heroic acts for the sake of fame and attention.

It shouldn’t be all that much of a surprise that there was more going on here than was initially clear, especially since some of the evidence really started to pour in. All of it ended up being connected, at least in part, to a slimy lawyer who spent a good bit of time putting innocent people in jail years ago.

What was super-fun about the way that the case ended was that Jerry actually ended up making McGarrett’s story into a comic book. There was a little bit of embellishing that went on, but in all honesty, it wasn’t altogether hard in order to imagine him doing something like jumping onto a helicopter and commandeering it / taking the bad guy out in the process.

Adam tries to clear his name

Earlier this season, we saw this story start to heat up when Adam returned to Hawaii and made it clear not all that long after the fact that he was innocent of any crime that happened regarding his sister. There was a chance for this episode to expound on some of this a little bit more. It seems as though everything may actually be resolved now, which seems about right since Adam now is more of a full-fledged part of Five-0 and can put some of his skills to use.

Yet, do we really think that he is free from some of his demons? We’re not altogether sure about that, largely due to everything that we’ve seen this guy go throughout already. It’s too hard to say with absolute confidence that he is ever moving forward and completely separate from some of the stuff that exists within his past.

CarterMatt Verdict

This episode proved to be an important installment for Jerry, mostly because of his attachment to comic books and to some of the islands’ urban legends. This was, overall, a heck of a fun episode at times, and we appreciated all of the little nods to comic books throughout.
