NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 9 review: Who’s running Deeks’ bar?

NCIS: Los Angeles

Tonight, NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 9 offered up an installment that was certainly intense, especially when it comes to precisely how things managed to escalate. This was an episode that started off with a dramatic home invasion, but, to go along with it, a General in Omer Abidi who found himself increasingly desperate as much of his life started to crumble. He was at the home of his friend at the time of the invasion and throughout the hour, he was absolutely put in jeopardy.

Yet, we do think that this episode won’t be altogether remembered for the case itself (even though it did get rather emotional near the end of hour), but rather some of the fun odds and ends that we had a chance to see along the way. Take, for example, getting a chance to see Nell and Eric embark on a little bit of an apartment hunt. Their relationship is moving forward, but there are still some more roadblocks that they have to work through. (At least we did learn that Eric and Deeks have something in common — they both love This Old House.)

Meanwhile, tonight also featured Deeks and Kensi going undercover as a part of a mission, one that featured him being a photographer for the rich and the famous … which included some really awful frat bros. Watching Deeks talk to hipsters and/or frat guys is one of our favorite things, especially when he was interviewing some candidates for his bar alongside Kensi earlier on during the episode.

So who is going to manage the bar? As it turns out … Deeks’ mother! She made it clear at the end of the episode that she was the perfect candidate to run the bar, given her social skills and also her ability to serve a wide array of different drinks. She’s knowledgeable and, beyond that, she’s ridiculously funny. Any excuse to get her back on the show, right?!

CarterMatt Verdict

Is this season really working? We think there’s some room for discussion here, especially since it feels like there’s had to be some adjustment here on the fly. Linda Hunt seems to have been gone for longer than she originally wanted as she recovers from a car accident this summer; with that, there’s been no Hetty, and there’s also been no Mosley. The real vacuum of familiar leadership at the top has kept there from being as much familiarity during some of the scenes back at headquarters.

Yet, at least some of the cast are still doing their best in order to move the story forward, and also have a lot of fun along the way. This episode managed to be one of the funnier ones that we’ve seen all season, especially when it got to the bar story at the end.
