The Walking Dead season 9 episode 9 return date hopes: When’s it back?

The first thing that we should note in regards to a potential return date is simply this: You are not going to be seeing the series back at some point in 2018. This marks AMC doing what they have largely done every single season since they first started doing 16-episode seasons — they offer up the first half in the fall and then, following a lengthy hiatus, they put the second half on in the middle of the winter. Typically, for years when there is no Olympics, the show comes back a week or so after the Super Bowl. There’s no way that the network wants to compete with that, especially now that we are in an era where The Walking Dead is routinely drawing smaller audiences.
Given that the Super Bowl this year is taking place on Sunday, February 3, we feel like the most likely return dates for the remainder of season 9 are February 10 or February 17. These dates do offer up AMC an opportunity to promote the show throughout the hiatus and hopefully try to paint it as much-watch TV even without Andrew Lincoln as a part of the main cast. We do think that the ratings have done a little bit better than we expected without Rick; there was a worried part of our brain that felt like they could’ve slid fairly fast down a cliff, but that didn’t end up happening. Kudos to the Walking Dead fandom for still sticking together, and also proving a number of people within the media business wrong.
Ultimately, we do anticipate some sort of formal return-date announcement over the coming weeks, provided that it doesn’t happen tonight. We really don’t think that there is any reason that the show has for necessarily keeping people waiting on a return date, mostly because you do want them to be planning ahead and thinking about what you could be doing next. Given that The Walking Dead is on the cusp of accelerating the story of the Whisperers, they certainly do have a compelling enough villain — Alpha is, at the very least, the strongest one that the series has brought to the table since we first saw Negan make his presence felt.
