Legacies season 2 renewal hopes: Is there a reason for optimism?

What was interesting about The CW’s decision to pick up Legacies in the first place was that this represented them banking on a franchise that wasn’t getting big numbers for the final season of The Originals. With that in mind, what were they really expecting here?
For starters, we think that they wanted another teen supernatural drama that could capture some of the magic that The Vampire Diaries did — but, they were also probably aware that viewership doesn’t work the same way now that it did so many years ago when The Vampire Diaries first began. This series is one that they are banking on having a strong performance on the CW app, in addition to DVR ratings and internationally. To date, that strategy seems to be working in that Legacies has drummed up a good bit of digital support and seems to have found its footing both with Vampire Diaries fans and also new viewers alike.
When it comes to the live+same-day ratings, Legacies does have a little bit of work to do in that regard. This is a show averaging a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is not that far above what we’ve seen from another new series in All American. (Granted, Legacies is averaging a much larger audience in total viewers — it may be getting a lot of teen viewers or viewers over the age of 49.)
Our current renewal assessment
There’s a reason to have a little bit of confidence that Legacies will come back. For starters, the series already was picked up for a “full season” of 16 installments, meaning that The CW has some confidence in it. Beyond just that, we do think that the network may be wary to cancel many of their shows given that iZombie, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and also Jane the Virgin are all ending. The digital footprint here is large and we do think that it could only continue to expand.
If you do love Legacies, the suggestion that we have is simply this: Just keep watching. Keep having fun with some of the craziness that Julie Plec and the writers are throwing out there. We do think that there’s a whole lot more story to tell here and there could be for a rather long time.
