Outlander season 5: When could the first tidbits start coming out?

Outlander season 4

For our afternoon Outlander piece today, why not spend a little bit of time looking ahead to the future?

One of the real challenges when it comes to a series like this is that for the writers and producers, they are often working on a number of different things at the same time. With that in mind, important people like Ronald D. Moore, Matthew B. Roberts, Maril Davis, and Toni Graphia are already starting to look towards season 5 even while season 4 is still airing. The writers room has been open for weeks now and slowly but surely, stories are starting to get together.

So when could some of the first news on the series’ future actually start coming out, whether it be plot information, casting, or at least some filming or location teasers? Odds are, you’ll be waiting for quite a while still. While we have some confidence that there will be some castings announced prior to the show’s return to filming in February, often Outlander keeps its castings private for a while — even if the story is an adaptation in some ways, there are still certain elements that they like to be fairly hush-hush about. We don’t think that any castings will be made official until roughly the time that filming actually begins. With production on season 5 slated to take most of next year, we imagine that there will be some assorted announcements that come out here and there along the way. The cast are enjoying a little bit of a break now, but their busy time is coming. For the writers, we almost wonder if there is ever a time when things are not busy. Even during production, they still are available to do rewrites, answer questions, and contribute when called upon by any means necessary.

What is somewhat interesting to us about Outlander is that in so many ways, every season of the show is different — not just in locations and themes, but in timelines. Take, for example, back when season 3 was airing — season 4 filming was already underway, and a number of the scripts had already been written. Meanwhile, now season 4 is airing and the writers are having to move forward taking on material for next season. Given that the season 6 renewal is already in the can, odds are that they will start working on season 6 at some point next year to ensure that they can get a jump on whatever is coming.
