As of right now, Designated Survivor season 3 is in the midst of production. It’s certainly had an underdog story to even make it this far, given that at one point, ABC had canceled the show and it was stuck in limbo for months.

Now that we do have a season 3, we have to go ahead and ponder the question: What are the chances of a season 4? Is it really too early to be thinking about it? From our vantage point, it’s really not.
Like with almost any other show out there, the strength of Designated Survivor moving forward is dependent almost entirely on the fans. These are the people who were there for it throughout the cancellation limbo and are there with it now. They could actually help the series’ renewal odds right now by watching the first two seasons on Netflix — they are on there, and that should give the streaming service a sense of its expanding popularity. If you get people hooked on it now, this should help to further ensure that there are more viewers who will stay hooked on it down the road when we get closer to a potential season 3 premiere date.
We almost think that in this era, shows and audiences thinking far ahead is a necessity. This is not the Netflix that it was a few years ago, when they were a little more eager to renew the majority of their shows. There’s been more than a half-dozen notable cancellations by the series this year and more could be coming. While we definitely do think that Netflix would like to keep Designated Survivor if they could, we hardly think that they are guaranteeing anything behind the scenes. They just went through a great deal of trouble in order to acquire it and save it; but, Netflix has so many shows that they don’t need to rely on any acquisition to make or break them.
So basically, there’s a reason for some early optimism about a season 4, but we all need to step back on it being a guarantee. Just remember to spread the word and when the new season premieres, watch it as soon as you can! Talk about it on social media, and do whatever you can so that others do the same. (Of course, we’ll do our part by sharing more news once it is out there.)
