Vikings season 5 video: Jonathan Rhys Meyers on Heahmund’s story
In the video below, you can hear Jonathan Rhys Meyers do his part to describe the circumstances that lie ahead for this character, including his plan to venture forward towards England. What’s the hope here? To claim some land and start to settle — basically, this marks an opportunity for many of them to begin a new life for themselves. This is an opportunity to actually start anew and give characters a chance at something that they would not be getting under the rule of Ivar. It may not have been the path that they first expected, but it is very much a worthy path that can still have a noteworthy conclusion to it.
Yet, and in true Vikings fashion, there are going to be complications to the plan that Heahmund has — with one of the biggest ones being Lagertha. He did not expect to form the feelings that he has for Katheryn Winnick’s character and this does fundamentally alter some of the way in which he looks at the world. His priorities are not so cut and cry, and while his faith is still among the most important things to him, there is also still something else. He will have to learn how to balance all of that.
Beyond all of this, there is still something else that could get in the way of Heahmund’s future — a vision that he has of a hellish scenario, one that strikes fear deep within his heart. This vision is another fine example of the constant conflict that exists within him, one that he finds himself constantly at odds over the sort of person that he wants to be. There is of course that part of him that wants to be able to see a metaphorical light at the end of the tunnel, but there is also that part of him that sees something so much darker and more painful. His faith tests him, as does his duty. He’s taught in religious texts to show love and yet, must fight and exist within a culture of violence. He’s one of the more constantly-conflicted characters within the world of this show, and we don’t even think we’ve made it to the point just yet where he realizes his true destiny. That is something the story may arrive further at in due time.
