All American season 2 renewal odds: Does the football series have a chance?

All American season 1

In today’s edition in our Ratings Progress Report series, we’re talking a look at the future of a show in All American that has a lot going for it. It’s an original property on The CW with a big-name producer involved, and also just so happens to be well-loved by critics. It’s bringing you an inspirational tale of football and finding yourself, and it’s certainly one that we recommend for a binge-watch in the event you get a chance to see it.

Now that we’ve said all of that, though, is there a chance that the series is going to make it to a season 2? We know that there are always people out there who worry about getting committed to a show that could end up being canceled. When you look at the ratings, there is a possibility of that happening.

The good news – The CW did order three initial episodes of All American beyond the initial 13, so there is obviously a little bit of faith that the network has in the show. We do think that the critical acclaim here helps tremendously, as does the fact that The CW recently expanded to six nights a week. They need shows, and this one does compliment Riverdale in that the two are about high school and do not feature the same supernatural stuff that you’ve got on several other nights of the week.

The bad news – Of the new shows that The CW did order, All American is posting the lowest total average both in total viewers and also in the 18-49 demographic. That’s a cause for some concern, and the show’s future could come down more to how it is performing in DVR viewings and also online streams. It does help that The CW makes many of its episodes available on the app for free, so there are some ways to keep audiences engaged for a little while longer.

The current renewal odds

At the moment, we’re cautiously optimistic for All American in the way that we are with all of the network’s new series. With Dynasty performing poorly and Jane the Virgin / Crazy Ex-Girlfriend / iZombie ending, The CW does need to keep some other shows around. They are also a network that doesn’t love to cancel first-year shows unless they don’t really see a support base there. At least with All American, you do have a dedicated following, steady ratings, and also critics who care about it. This may be enough in order to ensure the show stays around — at least for a little while longer. We’ll know more come the spring.
