Call the Midwife 2018 Christmas Special will air on PBS Christmas Day

Call the Midwife season 8

For all American Call the Midwife fans, we come bearing good news — the upcoming 2018 Christmas Special will actually air on Christmas Day!

In the post below, the show’s official Twitter account confirmed the great news — which, strange as it may sound, is not actually a certainty with this show. There have been some Christmas Specials in America that haven’t aired on December 25. Some have aired a little bit later, with one of the big reasons there being that in the United States, watching television on Christmas isn’t anywhere near the tradition that it is in the UK. For the most part, US broadcasters do almost everything that they can in order to duck and cover around the holiday. Viewership just isn’t altogether great across the board.

Yet, the situation with PBS and Call the Midwife is a little bit different than your standard US network. PBS isn’t anywhere near as dependent on the Nielsen ratings as the majority of other broadcast networks. With that in mind, they can do more or less anything that they want when it comes to programming. They can repeat the Christmas Special throughout the holiday, in the event they want to build some more ratings for it in between Christmas and New Year’s, while also capitalizing on whatever they can live. We’re sure that there is still a nice contingent of Call the Midwife fans out there who would love to check out the series on Christmas Day like their British counterparts — if nothing else, it can help to build a rather nice tradition for many people in America!

We certainly hope that there are some happy moments over the course of the Christmas Special, especially given that season 7 earlier this year ended on such a sad and heartwrenching note. While we know that there are some difficult things that transpire in Poplar, we do still like to imagine that Call the Midwife is a hopeful show that encourages positivity and characters trying to make the world a better place. With that, we want to believe that there could be some positive outcomes to the stories that are coming for at least a few characters. Is that really too much of something to ask? We don’t think so.

Following the Christmas Special, season 8 of Call the Midwife will premiere next year — it should premiere on BBC One at some point in January (at least if it follows the similar model to what we’ve seen in the past). Meanwhile, our expectation is that the new episodes will come onto PBS in the spring, as it has been in the past.
