David McCallumIs David McCallum leaving NCIS? After so many years of playing Ducky, tonight’s new episode did continue to raise that question.

After all, McCallum has not been around the series all that much this season — right when he was finally back, though, tonight featured the character stating that he was leaving again. He’s going to be taking some time to see some of the world, but it does seem as though the actor is going to be back at some point a little bit later this season. As a matter of fact, Ducky even said that he will be returning in the new year.

So why is David McCallum really fluttering in and out of the series in the first place? It’s fair to wonder that very question, but the answer here is very simple: He’s not contracted to do every single episode this season. As a part of his season 16 deal, the actor is only signed on for a percentage of the season — it gives him more of a chance to spend time with his family.

Rest assured — McCallum is not leaving the show at this particular moment. We do think that he’s going to be back in some capacity soon, and we do hope that there is a big story coming for him before too long. This character is too important to be left in the dark forever — we certainly don’t want that! If you are bringing him around to a greater extent, why not find some interesting things for him to do?

Ultimately, we’re not sure that we will ever see this show in a position where they use McCallum every single episode again just because this arrangement seems to be working for them — it’s a way to keep a legacy character around while also keeping the actor’s schedule fairly open. Given that McCallum has put in the hours that he has for well over a decade with this show, it makes some sense that he would want some more opportunities to try and do other things.

Remember that NCIS will return to the air in two weeks with new episodes. Typically the series does air at least a new episode or two in January, so there may be some sort of opportunity to see him back on the show at around that point. We’ll keep you posted with some more information on that particular subject.
