It appears as though The Blacklist season 6 is going to be premiering on NBC even earlier than anyone first thought!

Today, the network confirmed that they are bumping up the first episode of the James Spader – Megan Boone series to Thursday, January 3 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern — almost a full 24 hours earlier than the original date they released. What’s the reason for the move? It seems to be a way for the series to capitalize on the potential strength of midseason series The Titan Games. NBC wants this show to be as successful as possible, or at least as successful as it can be given that it is being placed within a super-difficult night of the week opposite some heavy competition.

What NBC is planning to do now is fairly simple: Give The Blacklist the special premiere, but then also repeat the season 6 premiere at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on January 4 (when it was originally supposed to air). The second episode of the season will air, as previously announced, at the show’s normal timeslot in 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

Basically, there is no downside to what NBC is deciding to do here — they have set up the start of The Blacklist in a way that makes tremendous sense for them commercially. They’re giving it two nights to get off to a great start and we have to hope that this momentum is going to last the remainder of the season. Granted, there is still more that they could do on the promotional end, whether it be unleash some sort of fantastic new key art or an epic full trailer. We figure that much of this will come, but probably not until we get around to the other side of Thanksgiving given that the network likely does not want the show to get swallowed up in much of that.

The foundation of The Blacklist season 6 remains simple: It’s going to be the story of Liz Keen trying to determine the real identity of Raymond Reddington, who hasn’t been exactly forthcoming with her about his true identity. Yet, there are still more questions out there regarding his intentions beyond that. What happened to Liz’s real father, and how is she going to move forward with the information that she has? That’s critical, since it could, in one way or another, change both her thinking and the entire path for this series overall.
