Big Little Lies season 3: Nicole Kidman unsure of series’ future
For starters, it is somewhat of a miracle that there is a second season of the show to begin with. This was originally devised as a limited series, but that plan did change after the positive reception and critical acclaim. Season 2 filmed earlier this year, and while there is no firm premiere date, all signs point to it coming next year. (Based on the current release window over at HBO, our estimation is that season 2 will probably premiere at the conclusion of Game of Thrones, which will likely be in either May or June. The network already has True Detective season 3 lined up beforehand.)
Unfortunately, the odds of a season 3 at the moment are low much in the same way that the odds of a season 2 were low — it’s mostly about scheduling, and that is hard when you have a series featuring Shailene Woodley, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and a number of other super-famous people who constantly have other things in the works.
In speaking on the idea of the series’ future via Variety, here is some of what Kidman had to say:
“I think it would be hard to get the whole group together … But we would love to do it.”
The final part of that quote is the most important: There’s at least an interest still there and these people do love having the opportunity to work together. The most-important thing here is obviously that Big Little Lies doesn’t need to be the sort of series that come son the air every single year. Heck, it doesn’t even need to be the sort of thing that comes on the air every few years. This could be a program that can return whenever the cast wants it and we feel like the viewership will still be there. While it’s possible season 2 was more expensive than season 1 (the more successful something is, the more that you have to pay the cast), we do still think that the number of subscriptions the show brings in should be more than enough to level the playing field — at least to a certain extent.
For now, let’s wait and see precisely what’s coming with Big Little Lies season 2 before we start thinking too hard about the show’s future. It is hard to predict the ratings in advance, and it is even harder to gauge just what the critical reception is going to end up being. All of that will start to make itself a little bit clearer in due time.
