Dancing with the Stars season 28 renewal odds: Will it be back?

Dancing with the Stars

Will there be a Dancing with the Stars season 28 on ABC? This seems to be a reasonable thing to bank on at the moment.

Yet, the surprising news entering tonight’s finale is that technically, there is no official news as of yet as to the series’ long-term future, and it is certainly possible that due to American Idol, ABC may choose to do something a little bit different this season.

Earlier this spring, ABC opted for a shortened, athletes-only edition of Dancing with the Stars that began after American Idol wrapped up its Monday episodes. That proved to be a commercial disappointment, failing to get the same ratings as some flagship seasons. We do understand why, given that the best seasons of this show are the ones that thrive on a diversity of different entertainers and walks of life. Also, doing such a truncated season did end up causing there to be less of an emotional journey from start to finish.

It’s possible that the network announces tonight some sort of shortened season once more; however, it is not completely out of the realm of possibility that they opt to do instead another season next fall, one that is a lot more traditional by Dancing with the Stars standards. If there is one thing we wish they would with these shows, it is extend them a week longer so that we can get a proper holiday special on the other side of Thanksgiving. With that, you also give ABC one more week of solid Monday-night programming before you send Dancing with the Stars off to the pasture.

Even though the immediate future of the ballroom franchise may feel somewhat uncertain, it does feel certain that there will be a future for Dancing with the Stars on ABC. Given that the network just ordered a Junior edition of the series for the first time, there is little reason to think that they are going to be altogether eager to cancel it now. They may just need to think of some sort of mechanism to boost ratings, whether it be different casting or more ways for viewers to be engaged and interactive during the live broadcasts. (If the series ever does go down to a season a year, maybe that will in some way increase demand — it worked okay for The Amazing Race this past season, and America’s Got Talent has found great success with this for quite a few years.)
