What is the current state of an FBI season 2 renewal over at CBS? Well, this article is all about getting to the bottom of it as a part of our Ratings Progress Report series.
We should start off this article by noting this: At the moment, nothing is altogether cemented one way or another when it comes to the future of the series. It’s got a full-season order, but that by no means is a guarantee of more. This is also a show that has certainly experienced a great deal of creative turmoil so far. It has endured a number of showrunner swaps; if there is a positive spin that you can put on this, it’s that CBS on some level does have a good bit of faith in this show. If they did not, they would just ride it out even if there were some elements that, from their vantage point, weren’t quite working 100%.
For the time being, the biggest reason to have optimism for an FBI season 2 is simply this — the ratings for the first season to date. This is a show that has managed to draw pretty great numbers in total viewers especially; beyond that, these numbers are consistent. It has kept a nice chunk of the 18-49 demographic from its lead-in NCIS and if it does find a way to keep that up, it’s not altogether hard to figure that it will eventually find its way to another batch of episodes.
As a matter of fact, we’d go so far as to say that FBI is a show that may have better chances of renewal than about 90% of other new shows out there. One of the things that makes Dick Wolf the mega-producer that he is that he knows how to make cops likable. He finds a way to really twist and spin his narratives in such a way that the heroes are relatable and the cases are grounded and down to earth. The episodes are also constructed in such a way that you can watch one of them, miss a week, and then be able to come back the next week without feeling altogether lost.
While we’re not in an era these days where procedural network programming necessarily kills it time and time again, there is something about FBI that delivers consistency from its viewership and also quality crime drama on the air. While we need to learn more in terms of personal backstory from a number of these different characters still, there are a number of other things at the moment that FBI is doing right. Those are the things that they should continue to focus on: strong stories with compelling heroes.
