The Walking Dead season 9 episode 8 is airing on AMC in one week’s time and based on early scoop, this one is huge. After all, it is the midseason finale! It was only yesterday that the show was introducing us to its new normal without Rick Grimes as a part of the cast. Now, we have to actually handle the fact that it’s going to be going away for a couple of months.

Below, CarterMatt has the Walking Dead season 9 episode 8 synopsis, which seems like a pretty nice jumping-off point for some of the story that is coming up:
A small rescue mission braves a dangerous herd in their hunt for a missing comrade, only to discover a surprising threat that could doom them all.
Sounds ominous, no? Well, this episode could be the one that really escalates everything and starts to fold in the Whisperers and Alpha as a major part of the story. The first episode sans Rick seemed to be mostly a worthy introduction to life without him at Alexandria. Meanwhile, tonight’s episode was very much based around Carol and Daryl — while there is certainly a part of that we enjoy just because those characters are so fantastic, it was also hard to really put the focus on them when there were still so many different questions elsewhere.
Nonetheless, this episode should give you a few more updates about Alexandria / the surrounding communities while also preparing you for some of what’s coming in the second half of the season. The Whisperers, led by Alpha (Samantha Morton), are one of the most intriguing threats that we’ve seen on The Walking Dead to date. They deal with walkers and the world around them in a way that is definitely unique, but also a way that is bound to lead to many a different clash with humanity. These characters were very much a part of the larger story of the comics, but we haven’t really had too many opportunities to really see how they are presented through the lens of the show. We’re now very much in the midst of getting said chance.
There is no official return date yet for The Walking Dead on the other side of the midseason finale, but it does certainly feel like you’re going to get a chance to see it back on the air come February. With there being no real reason to delay it, why not give the people what they want once more? This midseason finale should be integral in convincing viewers to watch whatever season 9B turns out to be.
